PRIVATE SECTOR ENGAGEMENT IN TB DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

The PPIA program supported by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), was focused on private sector engagement in TB diagnosis and treatment in Patna and Gaya in Bihar. The project was launched in June 2013 in Patna with an objective to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment with free diagnostics and anti-TB drugs, increase private sector TB case notifications; ensure treatment adherence and treatment completion. Later it was expanded to Gaya in 2018. The project networked doctors, laboratories, pharmacies, and informal providers into a cohesive system with a strong electronic backbone connecting them to enable better coordination of activities. Total case notified during the project time 82,000 and provided 46,000 tele-consultation; Annualized case notification rate, per 100,000 increased from 86 in 368; Microbiological confirmation improved in Pvt. Sector from 12% to 34%; Drug susceptibility testing (DST) improved from 12% to 56% and Treatment success rate among closed cohorts of private sector reported >75%. The project ended in December 2019 consistently out-performed weekly, monthly, and annual targets.
